Fire Prevention

Colonial Beach Volunteer Fire Department

Fire prevention is the responsibility of every member of our community. The Colonial Beach Volunteer Fire Department is committed to protecting lives and property through education, preparedness, and proactive safety practices. By understanding common fire risks and taking simple preventive measures, residents, visitors, and businesses can significantly reduce the chance of fire-related injuries and property loss.

Smoke Alarms: Your First Line of Defense

Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire by half. Every home should have:

  • Smoke alarms installed on every level of the home

  • Smoke alarms inside and outside each sleeping area

  • Interconnected alarms so that when one sounds, they all sound

Maintenance Tips:

  • Test smoke alarms monthly

  • Replace batteries at least once per year

  • Replace the entire unit every 10 years

  • Never disable a smoke alarm due to nuisance alarms—address the cause instead

Create and Practice a Home Escape Plan

In a fire, you may have less than two minutes to escape safely. Every household should:

  1. Develop a home escape plan with two ways out of every room.

  2. Designate a safe meeting place outside, such as a mailbox or neighbor’s driveway.

  3. Practice the plan at least twice a year.

  4. Teach children how to respond when smoke alarms sound.

  5. Emphasize “Get Out, Stay Out, and Call 911.”

Never re-enter a burning structure for any reason.

Cooking Fire Safety

Cooking is the leading cause of home fires. Most cooking fires are preventable.

Safety Guidelines:

  • Stay in the kitchen while cooking, especially when frying or broiling.

  • Keep flammable items (towels, paper products, curtains) away from heat sources.

  • Turn pot handles inward to prevent spills.

  • If a grease fire occurs, cover the pan with a lid and turn off the heat.

  • Never use water on a grease fire.

If a fire cannot be safely controlled, evacuate immediately and call 911.

Heating Safety

Heating equipment is a major cause of residential fires, especially during colder months.

  • Keep space heaters at least three feet away from anything that can burn.

  • Plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet—never use extension cords.

  • Have chimneys and heating systems inspected annually.

  • Use only approved fuel for heating devices.

Electrical Safety

Electrical malfunctions are a common cause of structure fires.

  • Avoid overloading outlets and power strips.

  • Replace damaged cords immediately.

  • Use extension cords only as a temporary solution.

  • Have a licensed electrician address recurring breaker trips or flickering lights.

Outdoor and Seasonal Fire Safety

Residents should exercise caution when grilling, using fire pits, or conducting open burning.

  • Place grills at least 10 feet from structures.

  • Never leave grills unattended.

  • Fully extinguish fire pit embers before leaving the area.

  • Follow all local regulations regarding open burning.

During holiday seasons:

  • Use flame-resistant decorations.

  • Water live Christmas trees daily.

  • Inspect decorative lighting for damage.

Fire Extinguishers

Portable fire extinguishers can be effective for small, contained fires.

Remember the PASS method:

  • Pull the pin

  • Aim at the base of the fire

  • Squeeze the handle

  • Sweep side to side

Only attempt to use a fire extinguisher if:

  • The fire is small and contained

  • You have a clear exit path

  • You have called 911

If conditions worsen, evacuate immediately.

Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Safety

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an invisible, odorless gas that can be deadly.

  • Install CO alarms outside sleeping areas and on every level of the home.

  • Test CO alarms monthly.

  • Never run generators or grills inside homes, garages, or enclosed spaces.

  • Never operate vehicles inside an attached garage.

Fire Safety for Businesses

Commercial property owners should:

  • Maintain clear exit pathways and illuminated exit signs.

  • Conduct regular fire drills.

  • Ensure fire extinguishers are inspected annually.

  • Maintain fire alarm and sprinkler systems in accordance with applicable codes.

  • Train employees on emergency procedures.

Community Risk Reduction

The Colonial Beach Volunteer Fire Department is dedicated to reducing community risk through:

  • Fire safety education programs

  • School presentations

  • Smoke alarm installation assistance

  • Public outreach events

  • Code compliance and life safety guidance

Community involvement strengthens our ability to protect lives and property.
